Businesses who supply consumer products within the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area must comply with product safety standards. Your legal requirements are the same whether you supply goods from a shop, business at home, market stall or via online platforms.
Local councils have enforcement responsibilities for safety related issues with consumer goods. We will:
- carry out programmed inspections of premises to ensure goods on sale are safe;
- provide advice to suppliers about legislation; and
- sample consumer goods to ensure they meet required standards of safety.
From 13 December 2024, there are changes to general product safety rules in Northern Ireland. The regulations introduce certain requirements with respect to product labelling, traceability and documentation, as well as clarifying that online marketplaces are in scope of the regulations.
Detailed guidance on the new regulations is available on the Office for Product Safety & Standards website.
