LCCC is supporting the campaign from Recycle Now encouraging homes in Northern Ireland to use their kitchen caddy and brown bin to recycle all their food waste.

Recent research shows that, while most people in Northern Ireland regularly recycle their food waste, some of us still put food in the general waste bin from time to time, which can add up.  Latest estimates show that around a third (30%) of what is in the general waste bins is food, most of which could have been eaten (23%).

Councillor Pat Catney, Environment and Sustainability Committee Chair, said: “The best thing we can do with our food is eat it, but for unavoidable food waste, make your kitchen caddy your go-to bin.  Even small amounts, like vegetable stalks, banana peels, nut shells, fruit stones, onion skins, eggshells, chicken bones and coffee grounds can be composted.”
