Once again the Lisburn and Castlereagh Labour Market Partnership (LMP) is running an ‘HGV employment academy’ for 15 local residents.
This innovative programme will be delivered as part of the Lisburn and Castlereagh Labour Market Partnership Action Plan.  The academy provides free training for residents to become fully qualified HGV lorry and bus drivers.

Funded by the Department for Communities, Labour Market Partnerships create targeted employment action plans for council areas, allowing for collaboration at local and regional level to support people towards and into work.

HGV licences are expensive to obtain and so can be simply out of reach for those who are interested in driving as a profession.  This employment academy will deliver fully funded training to help participants access employment.

Alderman Amanda Grehan, Regeneration & Growth Chair, encourages anyone interested in the HGV academy to find out more about what’s on offer. She said: “The previous HGV academies have been resounding successes.  We anticipate this one will help more local residents remove the costly barriers to a career in the transport industry while helping to tackle the ongoing shortage of drivers.

“Previously the interest in the programme has been very high, so with only 15 places available we would encourage you to apply quickly.  Let us put you in the driving seat for to your future career.”

Those applying to the HGV academy must live in the Lisburn and Castlereagh area and must be either unemployed, working less than 16 hours a week or at risk of redundancy.

Applications will close at 5.00pm on Friday 15 November 2024.  Participants can choose between:

  • Category C (Class 2) HGV licence or
  • Category D Bus licence HGV
