We're celebrating the creativity of local young people this week as local primary schools take part in a special Irish language arts project as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge / Irish Language Week 2026.

The schools artwork project, titled “Funny Focail / Focail Greannmhara”, invited pupils to explore and creatively respond to Irish words and phrases. Through colour, imagination and humour, children produced artwork reflecting the meanings and sounds of Irish language expressions in a fun and accessible way.

A short exhibition celebrating the pupils’ work took place at the Island Arts Centre, attended by Chair of the Community and Wellbeing Committee, Cllr Tim Mitchell. Selected pieces will remain on display in the Community Arts Walkway at the Island Arts Centre throughout Irish Language Week, which runs until Tuesday 17th March.

Cllr Mitchell said: “It is fantastic to see so many young people engaging in such a creative and imaginative way. Irish Language Week is open to everyone — whether fluent, learning or simply curious — and encourages shared participation across communities. I would like to encourage everyone to visit the exhibition and support our talented young artists.”

Irish Language Week 2026, running from 1st–17th March, is delivered through the council’s Good Relations Programme in partnership with the Island Arts Centre, with cultural support from Lisburn Féile and Carryduff Set Dancing.
