Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) has unveiled a memorial in Castle Gardens, Lisburn, honouring past and present employees of the Northern Ireland Prison Service. The memorial pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the course of public service and acknowledges the contribution prison officers and staff continue to make to communities across Northern Ireland.
The unveiling ceremony brought together the Lord-Lieutenant, civic leaders, elected representatives, serving and retired members of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, representative organisations, and bereaved families to mark this significant occasion of remembrance and recognition.
Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Brian Higginson, said: “This memorial honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out their duties. Their courage and dedication to public service will not be forgotten, and our thoughts remain with the families and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by their loss.
“Castle Gardens will provide a place for people to pay their respects and reflect on the service of those who lost their lives.”
Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Beverley Wall, said: “This memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the men and women who served with courage, commitment and a profound sense of duty.
“It reflects a collective sacrifice and honours those who paid the ultimate price in service to others. We also remember the families whose lives were forever changed by that loss.
