Positive Ageing Month 2026 has officially launched, celebrating the invaluable contribution older people make to communities across Lisburn and Castlereagh. Under this year’s theme, ‘On Your Doorstep’, the campaign will showcase activities, opportunities and connections available locally.
Throughout October, a wide-ranging programme of events and activities will take place across the Lisburn and Castlereagh area, encouraging residents to discover what is available on their doorstep, try something new and connect with others. The initiative forms part of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Age Friendly Action Plan 2024–2026, which prioritises the inclusion of older people by ensuring access to services, increasing participation and creating an enjoyable and supportive environment in which to live and grow older.
Launching the online calendar of activities and events for this year’s programme, Vice-Chair of the council’s Leisure and Community Wellbeing Committee, Councillor Bronagh Magee commented: “Our council is committed to creating a place where older people can live active and engaged lives and continue to make a valuable contribution to their communities. Positive Ageing Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and experiences of our older citizens, while this year’s ‘On Your Doorstep’ theme shines a light on the many opportunities available close to home.”
The council’s Age Friendly Champion, Councillor Gretta Thompson added: “I look forward to Positive Ageing Month each year. The 2026 theme, ‘On Your Doorstep’, is a reminder that opportunities to connect, learn, stay active and enjoy new experiences can be found throughout our local communities. I would encourage older residents to explore the programme, take part in an activity near them and help us tackle isolation and loneliness together.”
