We have opened the site further to residents and visitors by replacing what was originally a set of wooden steps.
The Lagan Towpath runs from Belfast through Lagan Valley Island and on to Sprucefield. It is a popular greenway used by the public for walking, running, and cycling.
Navigation House, currently operated by Stepping Stones NI, offers a hospitality service that is open to the public. The car parking facilities at Blaris Road completed in 2022 further supports the site, encouraging walkers and cyclists to park and enjoy the amenities while exploring the towpath.
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said, “This project is an excellent example of my department, through the Covid Recovery Small Settlements Regeneration Programme, working in partnership with central and local government to deliver schemes that support rural communities. This work at Navigation House will make the pathway safer and easier to use, encouraging more people to visit the area.”
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins welcomed the completion of the project. She said: “The Small Settlements Regeneration Programme is a great example of Departments working together to deliver real change in how people live and work bringing tangible benefits to our rural communities by supporting initiatives on the ground.
“I am delighted that my department was able to contribute £147k to this project in Lisburn which will provide a boost to local business owners and improve access to local amenities along the popular Lagan towpath.”
Alderman Amanda Grehan, Chair of LCCC’s Regeneration and Growth Committee said, “The new access path from the Lagan Towpath to Navigation House is a welcome development that aims to encourage active travel along the towpath. This improvement has greatly enhanced accessibility to Navigation House, and we hope it will encourage more people to explore this beautiful greenway.”
This project is part of the Small Settlements Regeneration Programme, which aims to address the regeneration needs of rural villages and promote active travel. It has been funded by the Department for Communities (DfC), the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI).
