Local businesses gathered at Lagan Valley Island today as Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council officially launched its new EU Trade Programme, designed to help companies explore export opportunities in either the Czech Republic or the Netherlands.
The launch event brought together local businesses and international trade specialists from Northern Ireland Trade Consultants (NITC) to hear about the opportunities available through the Council-supported initiative.
The two trade missions will provide participating businesses with expert market intelligence, in-country business matchmaking, tailored support, and market visits, helping them establish valuable commercial relationships and identify opportunities for growth in European markets.
Speaking at the event, Alderman James Baird, Regeneration & Growth Committee Chair, said: "Today's launch marks an exciting opportunity for local businesses looking to expand into international markets.
"The EU Trade Programme is designed to provide practical support and direct access to market expertise, helping businesses build confidence, establish new connections and unlock export opportunities that can contribute to long-term growth.
"I am delighted to see such strong interest from businesses across the Council area and look forward to following their progress over the coming months."
A Department for the Economy spokesperson said: "Supporting businesses to access new markets is key to building a more productive and regionally balanced economy. Through the Regional Balance Fund, the Department is supporting programmes that help businesses strengthen their competitiveness, develop new trading relationships and create sustainable economic growth."
Attendees heard directly from NITC's market specialists for the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, who provided practical insights into both markets and highlighted emerging opportunities for Northern Ireland businesses.
The next phase of the programme will involve one-to-one business assessments, followed by market research and matchmaking activities before participating companies travel to Prague in December 2026 or the Netherlands in January 2027 for their trade missions.
