It aims to encourage greater use of the Lagan Towpath and promote active travel through improved access from the village.

The scheme included upgrades to steps, footways, and signage alongside a bike repair kit added to Drum Bridge Car Park.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said, “My Department, through the Covid Recovery Small Settlements Regeneration Programme, continues to work collaboratively across central and local government to deliver successful projects that make a real difference to rural communities. The upgrade of the carpark in Drum Bridge provides improved accessibility for the public making the area more attractive to visit.”

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins welcomed the completion of the project. He said: “The Small Settlements Regeneration Programme is a great example of Departments working together to deliver real change in how people live and work bringing tangible benefits to our rural communities by supporting initiatives on the ground.

“I am delighted that my department was able to contribute £110k to this project, which will improve access to the popular Lagan towpath and increase opportunities for local people to walk, wheel and cycle in this scenic area.”

Alderman Amanda Grehan, Regeneration and Growth Chair at the council said: “We are keen to promote greenways and their benefits in terms of sustainability and connecting communities.  Lagan Towpath is a popular greenway and the enhancements we have carried out aim to encourage more people to enjoy it.  The greenway is now more accessible for residents and visitors, and we hope everyone will take advantage of the benefits of active travel.  The addition of a bike repair kit is a welcome feature for all cyclists and ensures they are supported whilst exploring the area.”

This project is part of the Small Settlements Regeneration Programme, which is designed to support the regeneration needs of rural villages and promote active travel.  It has been funded by the Department for Communities (DfC), the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI).
