Residents across Lisburn & Castlereagh will benefit from a simpler, more consistent kerbside recycling service, following Council approval of updated household waste and recycling arrangements to be delivered in-house across the Council area.
The approved service is designed to make recycling easier to understand and use, with clear guidance for households on what goes where. It will also allow residents to recycle more everyday items at home, including glass.
Under the approved model, households will be supported by a straightforward, standardised service:
- Fortnightly collection of a residual waste bin
- Fortnightly collection of a recycling bin, including glass
- Fortnightly collection of a food and garden waste bin
By aligning the accepted materials and approach across the Council area, residents will receive a clear, consistent service supported by simple communications.
The updated service will be delivered in-house by the Council’s Waste & Operational Services Unit, helping to provide a reliable and resilient service for residents across Lisburn & Castlereagh.
To support delivery, the approved plans include investment in vehicles and operational resources, along with a dedicated team to provide clear information and support for residents as the service is introduced. In areas where households currently use kerbie boxes or wheelie boxes, residents will be supported to move to a standard recycling bin.
Investment in the improved service will deliver significant benefits to the council area.
Council is keen to implement this change as quickly as possible and is preparing plans for a phased roll out. Residents will receive clear information in advance as plans are finalised.
Chair of the Environment & Sustainability Committee, Alderman Owen Gawith, said: “This is really positive news for residents. The updated service will make recycling simpler and more consistent across Lisburn & Castlereagh, delivered in-house by the Council. Including glass within the recycling service will make it easier for households to recycle everyday items as part of their regular collections, backed by clear guidance so everyone knows exactly what to do. We will keep residents fully informed well in advance, with clear, straightforward information throughout the roll-out.”
The Council has completed the relevant screening work and will continue to ensure collections are accessible, including assisted/back door collections where required, appropriate bin options where suitable, and information available in alternative formats.
