We are celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) from 5th to 11th May.

To say ‘Thank You’ to our residents who recycle, from Monday 6th May we will be offering residents who bring household items to recycle at any of our Household Recycling Centres one free bag of compost, while stocks last*.

The Household Recycling Centres are located at:

  • The Cutts: Derriaghy, BT17 9HN
  • Drumlough: Dromara Road, Hillsborough, BT26 6QA
  • Carryduff: 8 Comber Road, Carryduff, BT8 8AN

This year’s ICAW theme is ‘COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion!’

Compost can help build healthy soil and reduce climate change by:

  • Reducing the need for fertiliser by returning valuable nutrients to the soil.
  • Conserving water by improving soil structure to retain moisture.
  • Preventing soil erosion by reducing soil compaction and runoff.
  • Decreasing methane, a greenhouse gas which is 25 times more potent than CO2.
  • Acting as a Carbon Bank helping to store carbon in the soil instead of releasing it to the air.

We can all help by recycling our food and garden waste in the brown bin, so that it can be turned into nutrient rich peat-free compost.

* Stocks are limited, when it’s gone it’s gone.
