We’re proud to support International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), and want to say a big “thank you” to our residents who recycle!
From May Day, Monday 4th May, residents who bring household recyclables to any of our Household Recycling Centres will receive one free bag of peat-free compost - while stocks last. *
The Household Recycling Centres are located at:
- The Cutts: Derriaghy, BT17 9HN
- Drumlough: Dromara Road, Hillsborough, BT26 6QA
- Carryduff: 8 Comber Road, Carryduff, BT8 8AN
This year’s ICAW theme is ‘COMPOST…Feed the Soil that Feeds Us’ reflecting the vital role that compost plays in sustaining life on land.
When we apply high quality compost, we are investing in the health of our soil, ensuring it continues to provide the food and clean water that all life depends on.
Protecting and restoring soil is a global priority and one of the most impactful ways we can care for the planet by:
- Reducing methane emissions - a greenhouse gas which is 25 times more potent than CO2.
- Improving carbon sequestration in soil, helping return carbon to the ground instead of releasing it to the air.
- Providing essential nutrients for plants, supporting healthier gardens and more productive soils, reducing the need for fertiliser.
- Increasing water-holding capacity and preventing soil erosion by reducing soil compaction and runoff.
You can help protect the planet by putting your food and garden waste into your brown bin so it can be composted into nutrient-rich peat-free compost.
