We’re celebrating the success of our recent Age-Friendly Summer Scheme, which brought local residents aged 55 to 85 together to build relationships, enjoy new experiences and take positive steps towards improved health and wellbeing.

The six-week programme offered a varied schedule of activities designed to support social connection, physical activity and confidence. Participants took part in gardening workshops, ten pin bowling, a tour of Balance House, a visit to Royal Hillsborough Palace and Gardens and a trip to the Ulster Aviation Society.

The scheme also complemented the council’s wider Age-Friendly programme, including the recent 50+ Five Steps to Wellbeing event in Market Square, where participants enjoyed armchair aerobics, a ukulele taster session and walking opportunities at Castle Gardens.

Our Age-Friendly Champion, Councillor Gretta Thompson, praised the programme, saying: “The Age-Friendly Summer Scheme is a wonderful example of how meaningful activities can bring people together, encourage friendships and support healthier, happier lives. It is fantastic to hear that participants enjoyed the programme so much, with feedback showing that 100% of those who took part said they would recommend it to a friend.”

We're now planning further Age-Friendly activities as part of Positive Ageing Month in October. If you or someone you know would like to find out more about upcoming activities and events, email agefriendly@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk to be added to the Age-Friendly mailing list.
