October will be bursting with energy across Lisburn & Castlereagh as Positive Ageing Month 2025 takes place — a vibrant month-long campaign which recognises the invaluable role that older people play in our communities.

Timed to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons on 1st October, this
year’s theme, ‘Building Belonging: Celebrating the Power of our Social Connections’, places community and connection at the heart of the programme.

A packed calendar of activities has been launched by Councillor Tim Mitchell, Chair of Leisure & Community Wellbeing, and Councillor Gretta Thompson, the Council’s Age Friendly Champion. From fitness sessions and film nights to gardening, coffee mornings, and creative classes the programme offers something for everyone, encouraging participation, connection, and fun. There are also several standout events, including a guided Harry Ferguson Heritage Trail on Monday 14th October and a visit to the Ulster Aviation Society on Monday 21st October offering interesting cultural and historical experiences to older residents.

Councillor Mitchell said: “Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is committed to creating a place where older people can live active and engaged lives and can continue to make a valuable contribution to their communities. Positive Ageing Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and experiences of our older citizens while also promoting the value of staying connected.”

Councillor Thompson added: “As Age Friendly Champion, I look forward to Positive Ageing Month each year. This year’s theme highlights the importance of connection in our wider community – in creating a sense of purpose, inclusion, and joy in later life. It showcases activities and opportunities that encourage older residents to take part, try something new which can help tackle and reduce isolation and loneliness.”

The campaign is a key part of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Age Friendly Action Plan 2024–2026, which prioritises inclusion, accessibility, and wellbeing for older people living across the city.
