We're proud to partner with Ballynahinch Lions Club to help bring clearer vision to people in developing countries.
Residents can donate unwanted prescription glasses at any of our three Household Recycling Centres in the dedicated container. Any glasses with lenses that help you correct a vision impairment can be recycled here.
The Lions Club will collect the glasses and transport them to their Lions-run facility, Medico France, in Le Havre, where they will be sorted, graded and sent to developing countries around the world.
Alderman Owen Gawith, Chair of the Environment & Sustainability Committee, said: “I’m delighted we are working in partnership with the Lions Club to help those most in need of prescription glasses around the world. I’d encourage everyone to donate their old glasses to the scheme and help transform another person’s life.
"It is also a great example of waste prevention, as the glasses are reused rather than being thrown away.”
Service Director at Ballynahinch Lions Club, Kevin Poland, added: “Defective eyesight can often be corrected with spectacles, yet basic eye-care services are not available in many developing countries. Your donated spectacles will help children make the most of education and give adults better employment opportunities – simply by being able to see.
"We are extremely grateful to Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council for extending this scheme to their Household Recycling Centres.”
