You may need to provide a document to show that you are free to marry if you live in Northern Ireland and wish to get married outside Northern Ireland.
You need to:
- check with the authorities in the country where you hope to marry, what paperwork you need to provide. Not all countries will request this document.
- if required, you will need to complete a marriage notice application so that you can then apply for a certificate of legal capacity to marry (known as a certificate of non-impediment).
- Submit the above application to the council in which you reside, along with proof of your home address. You will need to book an appointment if you live within the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area by ringing 028 9244 7263 or emailing bdm.registration@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk
- provide copies of the supporting documents as required for a marriage licence i.e. full birth certificates, passports, decree absolutes etc.
- include a fee of £22 per certificate with your application
We will issue the certificate of legal capacity to marry once at least 28 days have passed.
Some couples find it is easier to have their legal ceremony in a Registration Office in Northern Ireland and then have a symbolic ceremony abroad. If you would like to do this in Lisburn, please speak to one of the Registration Team.
