As Mayor, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent at the age of 92.

The Duchess was widely admired for her compassion, humility and quiet dedication to public service. She was a reassuring presence during many significant moments in our national life and worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to support causes close to her heart. Her 1980 visit to Northern Ireland with The Duke of Kent marked a poignant and hopeful chapter in the region’s history, reflecting her deep belief in reconciliation and peace.

The Duchess showed great compassion and empathy for everyone she met.  By visiting Northern Ireland with The Duke of Kent in 1980 on the first official Royal visit to Northern Ireland since the murder of Earl Mountbatten, The Duchess demonstrated her quest to deliver the message of hope and peace.  Her volunteering at the Passage homelessness charity and taking 13 years out of Royal life to teach music in a primary school show how she cares for others and wants to give her time to help improve their future.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren and the wider Royal Family as they mourn their loss.  May we reflect on the Duchess of Kent and the lives she touched across the world carrying the message of hope and peace.

David Burns, Chief Executive of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council

The Duchess of Kent spent decades representing the Royal Family across the world.  She was committed to helping improve the lives of others whether that be teaching music, volunteering with charities, or listening to those who lost loved ones in difficult circumstances.  As a fan of tennis she was no stranger to Wimbledon and I remember her consoling a tearful Jana Novotna in 1993 and then five years later presenting the trophy to the Czech tennis star.  My thoughts are with the Duke of Kent and his family as well as the wider Royal Family who will support him in the coming period.

Alderman Allan Ewart MBE

As a mature student at Edge Hill University, Lancashire, I was presented with my degree by the late Duchess of Kent when they held the ceremonies at the University of Lancashire. She was very kind and asked me what I was going to do after my studies I was very impressed that she was interested, and I never forgot that moment. May she rest in peace.

I wish to express both my admiration of H.R.H. the late Duchess of Kent for a life well lived as well as my sadness upon learning of her death. She was the only genuinely warm member of the British Royal Family to conduct herself with absolute dignity without the slightest hint of scandal or controversy. As an American observer, I was always delighted to read stories of her and her immediate family in the Majesty and Royalty magazines, and I will never forget how she comforted Jana Novotna after the latter's devastating loss at Wimbledon in 1993. One of the pleasures of watching that greatest of all tennis championships was seeing this gracious, elegant, yet humble lady residing in the Royal Box. She came from the highest stratum of society but always treated others as equals regardless of their race or status.

Katherine Kent was also the first modern member of the House of Windsor to revert back to the Catholic church, which she did without fanfare before Princess Diana's mother decided to do the same in the mid -1990s. The Duchess of Kent was the true humanitarian in the Royal Family because she never called attention to herself or expected to create headlines for the good deeds she did. How ironic that she will now have the media coverage she never expected during her lifetime.

So many lives were enriched because of her extraordinary compassion which endured for sixty-four years in spite of the incredible burdens placed upon her as a senior member of the world's most exalted dynasty. May she rest in eternal grace and may all those who were blessed by her regal presence take comfort in knowing that the fine example she set will not be forgotten. Peace and glory to her spirit.

The Duchess visited a hospital in Leicestershire where my mum was a patient. The Duchess spotted my mum down the ward, not with the other patients who had gathered, and walked down to her. She spent some time with my mum. She never forgot the Duchess's kindness and compassion. Rest in peace. 🙏

Rand Singh

I send my condolences to the Duke of Kent and his children of the passing of the Duchess of Kent. In 1967 in Fiji, The Duchess said to my mother Savita Singh she wouldn't forget her smile and sari it was typical of the warmth the Duchess of Kent exuded to people.
