The Mayor, Councillor Brian Higginson has announced his Mayoral Charity as Air Ambulance Northern Ireland.
Mayor Higginson commented: "Air Ambulance Northern Ireland carries out lifesaving work every single day, and I am proud to support them as my Mayoral Charity. Their dedication, skill and compassion make an extraordinary difference to families across our region.
“Air Ambulance Northern Ireland is a service that any one of us may need at any time. Their ability to reach people in the most critical moments, often in remote or hard to reach locations, truly saves lives. This partnership is about raising awareness, raising funds and recognising the extraordinary work of the doctors, paramedics and volunteers who make this service possible. I look forward to helping raise both awareness and vital funds for their service throughout the year ahead.”
The Mayor would welcome as much support as possible from the community to help fundraise and raise awareness. Whether that’s by volunteering, organising an event or donating to the Mayor’s Charity.
In partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), Air Ambulance NI provides the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for the region. The service operates 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round.
The HEMS crew always includes a pilot, doctor, and paramedic on hand to deliver the very best pre-hospital critical care, both at the scene and whilst transferring the patient to the most appropriate hospital for their specific injuries. This ensures every patient is stabilised as quickly as possible, greatly reducing the level of permanent damage, and, where possible, saving lives.
What many people don’t realise is that the Air Ambulance is funded by the generosity of the public. Air Ambulance NI aspire to raise £8,200 per day in fundraising, which is equivalent to £3 million annually, to keep this lifesaving service running and operational.
Air Ambulance NI is fortunate to count on tremendous public support and goodwill, and will never take this for granted. It’s not only the medical crew who save lives, but the people who support the service.
