Castle Gardens is a green oasis within the heart of Lisburn. The formal gardens are perfect for a relaxing walk or to sit and eat a packed lunch on your lunch break and connect with nature.
The trees help clean the air from traffic on the roads by absorbing the toxic exhaust fumes, absorb traffic noise and provide shelter from the elements.
On 6th June 2023, we planted an Acer Platanoides ‘Crimson King’ in this park to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and the Queen at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May 2023, exactly one month on from the historic occasion.
Key facts about Castle Gardens
- it is the most historically significant open space in Lisburn and was once the site of Lisburn Castle, a 17th century fortified manor house, built by the Conway family, the landlords of Lisburn
- it was gifted to the people of Lisburn in 1903 by the heir to Sir Richard and Lady Wallace
- in June 2008, the upper 19th century gardens and the 17th century terraces were restored with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We converted the World War II Air Raid shelter into an education centre, for school and community use as part of this restoration project
